    Creator of the Turma da Mônica - Illustrator

    Mauricio de Sousa began his career as an illustrator in the region of Mogi das Cruzes, near Santa Isabel, where he was born. At age 19, he moved to São Paulo and worked for five years in the Folha de Manhã newspaper (current Folha de São Paulo), writing police reports. In 1959 he created his first character, the dog Bidu. From there came, Cebolinha, Cascão, Mônica, and so many others. In 1970, he launched the magazine Mônica. After going through Editora Abril and Editora Globo, he signed an agreement with the Italian multinational Panini. About 150 national and international companies are licensed to produce more than three thousand items, with the characters of Mauricio de Sousa; its creations reach around 30 countries.
